About

If YUAN MUSEUM explores how art is experienced in exhibition spaces, YUAN explores how art becomes part of everyday life.

Brand story

A source, not a fixed form

In Chinese, yuan (源) means origin and source, and also the circulation, generation and evolution that follow from it. It describes not a fixed form but a state of constant becoming, and it is the idea the brand takes its name from.

From this understanding, YUAN treats design as an open system, exploring the relationships between material, space, the body and perception. Rather than defining itself through a single product, the brand builds a way of practice that connects art, design and everyday life.

For YUAN, the East is not a style but a way of understanding time, nature and perception. The brand carries that way of thinking into contemporary life, rebuilding the relationships between people and objects, people and space, and people and nature.

Brand origin

From a museum, into the home

YUAN comes from YUAN MUSEUM, and both come from the same line of work. SONG TAO opened TAO Gallery in 1994, founded O Gallery in 2009, established YUAN MUSEUM in 2019, and founded YUAN. More than three decades of artistic practice, curatorial thinking and cross-disciplinary collaboration run through all four.

Rather than starting with products, YUAN begins with artistic research, transforming ideas into collections and Living Objects for contemporary life.

Brand position

A lifestyle brand rooted in artistic research

Through long-term collaborations with artists, YUAN carries artistic research, design thinking and craft practice into contemporary life, developing Collections with a complete concept for living.

The brand is not defined by a single material or a single product category. It keeps looking for what becomes possible between one artist and another, one material and another, one culture and another.

Ceramics are the first phase of that practice. From there YUAN opens gradually into wood, metal, glass, lacquer, textiles, furniture, lighting and the other territories of contemporary living, building an ecosystem of its own.

Brand methodology

Every Collection at YUAN begins with an artist’s research, not with a product.

01

Artistic research

Every Collection originates from an artist’s long-term body of research.

02

Design development

YUAN develops a design language together with the artist, one that answers contemporary ways of living while respecting the creative system the artist already works in.

03

Craft and production

Through material research and craft practice, that artistic language becomes objects which can be produced sustainably for everyday use.

04

Living Objects

A collection of objects carrying both the spirit of the research and ordinary usefulness.

05

Lifestyle

Art becomes part of daily life, continuously shaping the relationships between people and objects, people and space, and people and living.

Transforming artistic research into living objects, where design meets the soul of craft.

The YUAN ecosystem

How a collection comes together

YUAN is built from two systems working together: a core team that holds the artistic vision, and an artist collaboration programme that opens it outward. Together they form an evolving platform for art and design.

YUAN connects artists, institutions and partners across different fields, and new collections are created together with them. Some collaborations begin in a studio, others in a museum programme or a workshop. Each one starts from the artist’s own research: a material, an inquiry, and a cultural narrative already under way.

The people involved stay visible: in the research that documents the work, and on the artist pages that credit it.
